When Everything You Built Falls Apart: Dr. Ken Kaufman on Spiritual Endurance
This week on the Dorsey Ross Show, Dorsey sits down with Dr. Ken Kaufman, a speaker, author, and chiropractor with more than 30 years of experience. He has served as team chiropractor for the Pittsburgh Pirates during spring training and spent 18 seasons in Major League Baseball.
On the outside, Ken had it all: a seven-figure practice, a respected name, and a comfortable life. Inside, he says, “the house of cards was getting ready to fall down.”
Identity Built on the Wrong Foundation
Ken traces the collapse to a simple root: he had tied his identity to success and accolades. Building in his own strength meant always chasing the next goal. “It’s an unstable foundation,” he says, and he believes it explains much of the anxiety, exhaustion, and strain around us.
A Turning Point
A friend invited him to a men’s Bible study, and Ken kept going back. On August 10th, he fully gave his life to Christ. The following week, his business, finances, and home all unraveled at once. Then, in the middle of it all, he read a familiar passage about peace. He describes the stress, fear, and anger lifting. “I felt the Holy Spirit just wash over me like warm water.”
From “Why Me?” to “What Can I Learn?”
Ken admits he was angry at God at first. He points to Job as a model and says one shift changed his faith walk: asking “What can I learn from this?” instead of “Why is this happening?”
What Spiritual Endurance Means
Ken compares it to running a marathon, except that in hard seasons we often can’t see the finish line. His advice is to take one step at a time and keep your focus on the cross, not the storm. He shares the daily prayer he starts and ends each day with, along with his advice not to “waste the fire.”
His Word of Encouragement
“You’re not defined by the trials, tribulations, and the adversity that you’re going through. You will be defined by how you respond.”
He adds that better days are ahead.
